Fasting is the deliberate and generally prolonged abstention from eating (and sometimes drinking) as a means of humbling oneself before God. The purpose of a fast is to draw near to the Lord. The purpose of a fast is not to lose weight, but to lose the weight of sin and the desires for this world.
